The Fall Guy – review

Ryan Gosling steps into the shoes of a stuntman to attempt to save Emily Blunt’s directorial debut from descending into production hell in David Leitch’s superb new action comedy, The Fall Guy, and finds himself inadvertently stumbling from one explosive situation to the next, the combination of all of which gives rise to an enormously entertaining and fantastically fun film that doesn’t contain a single dull moment.

From a profusion of irresistibly laugh out loud comedic moments and side-splittingly hilarious one-liners to a vast variety of very invigorating and visually thrilling action sequences and set pieces to an absolutely stellar and hugely electrifying soundtrack to a team of top-notch primary performers and extremely likable lead characters, The Fall Guy boasts all of the ingredients necessary to create a perfect Hollywood blockbuster and mixes them together impeccably to deliver just that, with the final product being a perfectly-paced, tonally consistent and flawless, invariably enthralling, and altogether superlative popcorn film that is a complete and utter joy to watch from start to finish.

But undoubtedly this movie’s greatest strengths are its two main stars, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, with the former turning in a terrifically charismatic, exceedingly charming and wonderfully rib-tickling performance as the titular fall guy, Colt Seavers, while the latter endows Seavers’s director, Jody Moreno, with a magnificently feisty, forthright and authoritative personality, and both performers have absolutely excellent onscreen chemistry together that results in a massively amusing and heartwarming romance, all of which ensures that The Fall Guy’s pair of protagonists are exceptionally lovable throughout.

Gosling and Blunt aren’t the only individuals who shine in the performance department, though. Aaron Taylor-Johnson delivers an appropriately and delightfully over-the-top performance as movie star Tom Ryder; Winston Duke contributes a collection of uproarious comedic moments as stunt coordinator Dan Tucker; and Hannah Waddingham showcases splendidly zany work as producer Gail Meyer.
All in all, The Fall Guy really is the perfect summer blockbuster. With its tear-inducingly funny comedy, extraordinarily exhilarating action, extremely energising soundtrack, totally irreproachable cast and remarkably compelling characters, David Leitch’s latest contribution to the annals of moviemaking offers up a whole lot to love and absolutely nothing at all not to like, and I highly recommend it to everyone, regardless of what your preferred types of film usually are.

Rating: 10/10.
